Nurse, 52, bunions on both feet. I finally found sneakers that don't have me limping by 3pm (long post, sorry)
Success storyI've been a nurse for 22 years. 12-hour shifts, on my feet the whole time, and for the last six or so years my bunions have made every shift feel twice as long. By 3pm I'd be counting the steps to the break room just to take my shoes off for five minutes.
Things I tried (so you don't have to):
- Sizing up a full size → heel slipping, blisters on the back of my ankles
- Expensive insoles → more cushion, same squeeze
- "Orthopedic" shoes → comfortable-ish, but looked like I'd borrowed them from my grandad
- My old trainers after 4 months. Look at the sides (pic 1)
What finally clicked was something my podiatrist said almost in passing: "Your feet are widest at the toes. Look at your shoes: they're narrowest right there." I'd spent years fixing the length when the problem was the shape.
So I went looking for a proper wide toe box. Not a "wide fit" version of a pointy shoe, but one actually shaped like a foot. Ordered my true size in Extra Wide.
Week 1: my toes could actually lie flat. Honestly a weird feeling.
Week 3: did back-to-back shifts and didn't take them off once on break (pic 2).
Not a miracle: my bunions are still there. But the all-day pressure on them is just… gone. Posting because this sub helped me so much when I was searching, and I wish someone had told me about the toe box thing years ago.
EDIT: Wow, did not expect this. Lots of people asking which ones. I put the link in my comment below so I don't have to reply to 200 DMs.
