Let me save you the money I wasted on six pairs that only got me halfway there.
I nursed for thirty-two years, so I have been on my feet my whole working life, and I have spent years and a fair bit of money chasing sandals that promised comfort. Birkenstocks that are still in the cupboard. A pair of Vionics. Clarks. Skechers, because a woman at church swore by them. A pair that ran me $150 at a proper shoe shop. Two more I will not bother naming. Dr. Scholl’s inserts I moved from pair to pair. And $400 on custom orthotics on top.
Not one of them got me all the way there. A couple did help my feet, and I would not be seen out in them. Beige, chunky, the sort of thing you keep for the garden. My husband would be ready to go and I would be standing there in something out of a hospital supply catalogue. The ones I did like wearing felt lovely in the shop and were flat inside two months.
Then I found a pair that got both parts right. Wore them from the garden straight to lunch and never gave it a thought. First day I had them on I got to the evening and realised I had not thought about my feet once.
